Core Mechanics
The soul (djinn) cannot die, there are only checkpoints where it can cross the upside to downside and vice versa. The map is same on both sides and the progression in the map is equivalent. The relics are pick able objects with which the Djinn summons the elemental powers. Until then Djinn can just posses a human form and find these relics.
The main objective is to defeat the Underlord with the skills and learnings though both the sides. The Djinn fights on upside with much difficult targets where as the down side is for leveling up or learning a skill.
So the Djinn after taking a certain damage falls down to downside, but if there also Djinn falls, then the game gets over. As there is no heal in the whole situation for a Djinn, only at these checkpoint it replenishes alittle.
Gameplay
Level Design
Here is a small level of how both the upside and downside are exactly the same with a checkpoint to travel across.
Downside
The down side is dark and number of demons are 20x than the upside, but the levels of demons are comparatively lower.
Upside
The is invaded by demons in lesser number but higher levels, Djinn finds relics in boxes or completing side quests.
Visual Iteration

The downside is only dark side of the upside. Everything is just distorted or disintegrated.
